Broke in NYC’s Guide to the July 4th Weekend!

Hello, comrades! Or, perhaps I should say, fellow patriots? Compatriots? …People?

In case you live under a rock, this Sunday is the Fourth of July. You know, the day when us Americans decided we weren’t going to be pushed around by those nancy Brits no more! Cue Declaration of Independence, “The Star-Spangled Banner”, and eventually, Mel Gibson wielding a tomahawk.

Naturally, a federal holiday is more than enough reason for New York City to party hard. This weekend, the city will be awash with parades, fireworks both legal and illegal, as well as five million barbecues. How does one begin to pick and choose, especially when broke? Continue reading

Help me, help my blog

The Intrepid Author thanks you!

Hey you! Yes, you!

Thanks for reading my blog!

I’ve only been around for a couple of weeks, but I want to thank my friends, family, and Internet strangers for reading, following, subscribing, and commenting on my posts! Your responses have been the most overwhelmingly positive I’ve received in a blogging venture, and it’s much appreciated! (Maybe I should have been broke a whole lot earlier?)

Now here’s the part where I ask you for stuff:

  • Please, if you follow me on Twitter, retweet me when I link to new posts! If you don’t follow me, you know…follow me.
  • If you are friends with me on Facebook, ‘like’ my new posts!
  • Comment on my blog posts! I want to interact with the people who read my blog!

And please, if you have any tips, suggestions, ideas, love, hate, comments… email me!

Putting the wallet away

If you know me at all, you know I’m obsessed with Twitter. My co-workers like to joke that I “work in-between tweets”. (I’m not that bad… I swear!)

But anyways, I love Twitter because I can aggregate everything I love into one place. It’s easier to check my feed while I’m working, as opposed to visiting every single one of my favorite websites.

Today, my breath caught in my throat when I saw the following update from WORD, a local indie bookseller in my neighborhood:

A girl’s gotta eat

Yes, Oliver wants some more.

In terms of basic survival, being able to eat probably ranks #1 on the list. Humans can live in all kinds of places, but food is non-negotiable. You don’t eat, you die.

But I’ve come to realize that in New York City, food seems to be second on the survival list. This is due to the high cost of rent. Once that rent check clears, then you can think about what’s for dinner. Continue reading

Cash only? Are you kidding me?

Get it!?

New York is one of the biggest, craziest, wealthiest cities in the world. Everything happens here first; it’s kind of like that scene in The Devil Wears Prada. Meryl Streep’s terrifying fashion editor character explains how a trendsetting chartreuse blouse starts life on a Paris runway, and goes to die as a sad, tired nylon sweater in the Gap’s bargain bin. This analogy only works if you equate New York with Paris, and everywhere else with the Gap. Continue reading

Your Benjamin Franklins make me uneasy

Falai. I felt like I was going to break everything in there.

The weird paradox of being broke in New York City:

If you have money (like, a lot) I will be uncomfortable. Continue reading
